Lincoln Public Library named a 5 STAR library for 3rd year

A recent survey by Library Journal magazine names the Lincoln Public Library as one of the best public libraries in the state.

The survey ranked libraries based on outputs such as circulation and program attendance, assigning Michelin Guide-like ratings or five, four or three stars. Out of 7,513 public libraries surveyed, 262 receive star ratings.

The Lincoln Public Library received five stars. “We are very proud of our library and the service that it provides the community,” said Library Director Carol Riley. “We try to respond to our particular community, and the community in turn uses the library.”

“We have a very engaging staff that pays attention and welcomes every person who comes into the library,” she said.

She’s confident that the townspeople will continue to support the library, both by their use of the facility and financially. Membership in the Friends of the Lincoln Library is up, and the annual membership drive surpassed its goal, and now have over 187 members.

In 1892 Lizzie Borden, a 32 year old single woman, was officially charged with the murder of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. The events that followed the murder would stir the curiosity of people across the nation. After four official criminal proceedings, Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the murder. The case is a mystery that has inspired documentaries, television movies, plays, musicals, poems, a scholarly journal, and law school case studies. This presentation is designed to review the facts and explore evidence that some suggest point to Lizzie’s guilt and others say exonerate her. CHILDRENS SUMMER READING PROGRAM

This summer our KIDS Summer reading program was very well attended, the theme this year was MAKE A SPLASH AT YOUR LIBRARY. The children read over 250 books, with a grant from the State Library’s KIDS, BOOKS and THE ARTS, we had Simon Brooks, storyteller, come to visit, he offered a workshop for the kids to learn about being a storyteller. We also had a program with the support of the Moosilauke Library entitled, MAD SCIENCE, where the kids learned all about the difference between MAGIC and SCIENCE. All had a great time. Our final program was LETS GO FISHING, a program offered through the NH Fish and Game. We had 9 kids and their parents signed up for a 3 hours workshop, where they learned about how to fish, they practiced casting, and what you need to be a safe fisherman. On Saturday August 7th we went up to Beaver Brook pond on Lost River ROAD and got to go fishing. Paul, the instructor said that if there are girls in the class, they will be the first to catch a fish, and SHE DID.
All the participants received their very own FISHING LICENSE.

The library has just finished setting up our NEW circulation software; we are please to announce that we have a web based card catalog, which enables access to our collection from your computer at home. This is a service that has been long overdue to the Lincoln Public Library.

GO TO www.lincoln.lib.nh.us and click on ONLINE CARD CATALOG to check it out!

This service will allow you to look at the collection and when you are logged in, place holds on the book of your choice, you will get an email from the library when the book is available. You will still have to come into the library to pick up your book, we can’t deliver the books, just yet, but who knows.

Your Hit Parade--25 Years Presenting America's Top Popular Songs. Presented by Calvin Knickerbocker

The radio and television program "Your Hit Parade" chronicled American popular music from 1935 to 1959. Presenter Calvin Knickerbocker will outline the quarter century during which the show served as a "tastemaker," featuring songs inspired by the Great Depression and on to the advent of rock and roll. We'll explore the show's relationship with sponsor American Tobacco and Lucky Strike cigarettes and hear about the artists the show helped launch and promote, from Frank Sinatra to Pat Boone. Knickerbocker will treat you to excerpts from original recordings of the songs that "Your Hit Parade" showcased on its weekly Saturday night show, from one-hit wonders to classic numbers still familiar today.

Baked beans, Indian pudding, fried clams, and lobster rolls... so many foods are distinctive to New England. Does food have anything to say about who we are as a region, about who we are as New Englanders? Bean-hole beans, johnnycakes, chocolate chip cookies, and pork pies -- you can find them all over the country now, but they all originally came from New England like so many of the customs and mores familiar to all. The presentation is informative, humorous, and chock-full of fascinating nuggets about the history of our regional foods. It includes reference to some of New England's more famous foodies -- Fannie Farmer, Hayden Pearson, and Julia Child -- and includes an analysis of how the changing times of New England have affected the way we eat.

Refreshments will be served, sample some of the foods of the region, Baked beans, Indian pudding, New England Clam Chowder, Tollhouse cookies and Apple Cider.

The Friends held their annual Book an Bake sale on Sat July 11th. The event was a huge success. We want to thank everyone who volunteered and donated books and baked goodies. We couldn't do it without our friends!
A special thank you goes out to Joan Denne and Don Thompson for all their dedicated help. A big thank you to Aaron Loukes who brought all the books upstairs and then returned in the AM to bring them out to the NEW tent that the Friends purchased for upcoming events.

The Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society will be having a Benefit Spaghetti Supper at Elvio's in Lincoln Tuesday January 27th with two seating one at 5:00pm and one at 6:00pm. Tickets are available at Lincoln Public Library or Elvio's Pizzeria. LIMITED SEATING

Bring in non-perishable food or other items for the Lincoln-Woodstock Food Pantry along with your overdue material, and we'll forgive your fine. Those who don't have overdue materials may still drop off items for the Food Pantry at the Lincoln Public Library between now and December 24.

Suggested items to donate include canned soups and stews, canned fruits or vegetables, Baby items, canned juices, pasta or rice, toilet paper, laundry detergent, toothpaste, bath soap, shampoo.

Use of the Food Cupboard has increased in recent months, and every little bit helps those in our community in need.

A group of Lincoln-Woodstock residents enjoyed a field trip sponsored by the Friends of Lincoln Library to the Currier Museum of Art --Zimmermann House and the Millyard Museum in Manchester on Thursday Sept 25th. Thanks to Karen Trickett and Sharon Carroll for organizing the trip and Tara Tower and the Town of Lincoln for the transportation. We are looking into other trips in the near future. Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read!
September 27 through October 4.

Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than a thousand books have been challenged since 1982. The challenges have occurred in every state and in hundreds of communities. People challenge books that they say are too sexual or too violent. They object to profanity and slang, and protest against offensive portrayals of racial or religious groups--or positive portrayals of homosexuals. We had another great ADULT summer reading program this year, We had over 50 people take bingo cards, and 13 of them complete the card, which is 25 books. The program is now over and the Grand prize winners are.....

The library will be sponsoring a concert by Patrick Ross, Fiddler extraordinaire, on Thur Sept 4th 7:30 at the community center on Pollard Rd in Lincoln. This is a ticket event $8 for Adults $5 for seniors and children or $20 for a family.

Romance and women's fiction author ALLIE BONIFACE will be at the library on Tuesday July 29th at 6:30 for an informal discussion of her books, ONE NIGHT IN BOSTON and LOST IN PARADISE. This program is free, and open to the public. There will be copies of her books available for purchase and signing. Light refreshments will be provided.

want to say a big THANK YOU to all that donated items for the sale. Special thanks goes out to Aaron Loukes, who with some friends brought up all of the books from the basement, to all the board members that spent time working the sale, to Peter Thoma who came to our rescue with allowing us to use his tents. and our ever faithful Joan Denne and Don Thompson for their dedication to making sure all the books were sorted and organized.

FRIENDS PLANT SALE RESULTS

The Friends had their annual Plant Sale on Sat. May 24th. The weather was perfect and the plants were lush and plentiful, thanks go to all the great gardeners of the area. The total for the sale was a whopping $1650.50, best sale so far.

I love this book so much, the characters are nicely described and what hardships they had to go through. Lots of triumph, love, lust, disappointments, but in the end, everything comes into place and you just never want to stop reading it.
